President Museveni Flags Off National Team for Tokyo Olympic Games



President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today at Kololo independence grounds flagged off the Team that will represent Uganda in the Tokyo Olympic games which will start on July 23. The President was accompanied by the First lady who is also the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon.Janet Museveni.

The team is comprised of 25 athletes, 8Parathelates and the technical staff .
The President encouraged the athletes to be disciplined, persevere and be noble while in the competition. He added that sports help to promote and publicise countries citing an example of how Akibua did it for Uganda by winning a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics.

The First Lady Janet Museveni encouraged the athletes to use their God-given talent to raise the country's flag high and also pray and honour God. She also thanked those who have been preparing the team amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, congratulated the Team for qualifying for the Olympics. He hopes that the players will make thier country proud by winning medals and raise the  flag high. He argued the players to stick to adhering to the Covid-19 SOPs as they reach Japan and wished them success in the competition.

Uganda first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics. Ugandan athletes have won a total of seven medals, all in athletics and boxing. The National Olympic Committee for Uganda was created in 1950 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1956.
