President Museveni Commissions the refurbished Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Lira

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has on October 21, 2020 commissioned the refurbished Uganda Martyrs Cathedral of Lira Diocese.

The president congratulated the Christians of Lira diocese on the milestone, achieved as they mark their Golden Jubilee.

“We must thank God that 50 years later, Uganda is now peaceful with freedom of worship as one of the liberties enjoyed minus restriction. I also applaud the Christians for leading the push to renovate the church, with us, the outsiders, only lending a hand,” Museveni remarked.

After over two years of waiting, prayers and work, the newly refurbished cathedral was opened on 20/10/2020 where the main celebrant was His Grace John Baptist Odama, Archbishop of Gulu.

President Museveni revealed that the Archbishop John Baptist Odama is leading a critical push among the people to create wealth through cassava growing for commercial purposes. He thanked him and all the other clergy involved in these wealth creation drives adding that this is a true reflection of walking in Jesus footsteps.

The President also pledged continued support for the Diocese projects. “To support these efforts, I will give the church here six tractors. The diocese can rent them out, plus other farming machinery, at an affordable cost to farmers.

I will also contribute Shs300 million towards construction of the bishop's house,” Museveni pledged.

To the priests, the President said that he  will donate 5,600 iron sheets while the women's guild will get a vehicle. He also promised to engage the Attorney General and also follow up with his office on the question of compensation for Barlonyo victims.
