NUP spends millions on a luxurious retreat as hundreds of its supporters fail to raise bail money.
The Newly elected Members of parliament from the National Unity Platform (NUP) party have convened today at Jinja Nile Resort Hotel for the first time since the January 14 General Election, for a retreat that will focus on guiding the new MPs on the party’s main objective ahead of the swearing-in ceremony in May.
Senior party leaders will also guide fellow MPs on how to take over from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) as the leaders of the Opposition, the process of appointing the shadow Cabinet, as well as the accountability committee leaders, sources who didn’t want to be named so that they could speak freely, said on Wednesday.
According to the sources, top party leaders are in a discussion on whether to front a candidate or throw their weight behind one of the candidates for the speakership race.
However, the leadership of NUP has been criticised for opting for a luxurious retreat, leaving thier supporters to languish in prisons with no money to secure bails or pay lawyers.
Nile Resot Jinja where NUP is holding the retreat, charges approximately UGX 500,000 Per night per individual on accommodation only. NUP which has over 80 delegates at the resort for a two day retreat Will spend over 160million on accommodation only.
This extravagant spending has left many party supporters wondering whether the party cares about it's ordinary members or it is a welfare scheme for the leaders.
The National Unity Platform allegedly receives funding from the LGBT foundation and other foreigners however the distribution of the dollars in the party remains seemingly unjust with those who do the donkey work getting nothing.
