Cant Our Leaders Express Political Grievances without Using Violence?

On 31st October evening, as I reflected on different happenings in the country, I chanced on an online meeting organized by the National Unity Platform and their Diaspora activists.

In the meeting, the attendants consistently affirmed their commitment to remove the “dictator” and to do this they proposed that they would incite the masses by revoking memories of Ugandans using the videos, pictures and any content found about the 2020 November killings.

I thought all this was a joke until videos of one activist Called Ashraf Kasirye  made it to my association WhatsApp group. In the video, Ashraf was calling upon Ugandans to join the fight against the "dictator".

One member in the whatsApp group posted and said that NUP is planning to have memorial activities for people that died in the November, 2020 riots.  Well, a memorial is a great idea just like we have all souls day in the Catholic Church.  But what was being shared in the Whatsapp group indicated that this was not going to be a memorial as usual.

In the videos shared on the group , Ashraf visits Francis Senteza Kalibala’s grave former Bobi Wine’s bodyguard. He committed that they are going to fight and avenge his death. Ashraf continuously says that Frank was killed by the President of Uganda and that they will not rest until his death is avenged.

Frank died last year around Busega Natete after falling off from a running vehicle and was crashed by another one as the supporters of presidential candidate and pop star Bob wine clashed with security forces all the way from Masaka.

Ashraf said that they will not allow any Ugandan to go to work on that day. The plan is to cause violence and block commercial activities in Kampala, and that is the kind of Memorial that is under way.

Other Members in WhatsApp group seemed to make fun of everything being posted but you could feel the fear disguised by the Kind of emojis shared to react to some posts.

The saddening fact is, we make fun of things that will ruin us. Being used by politicians and people in the diaspora for hand to mouth pay checks is not a new phenomenon but not learning from other countries’ sad experiences is ignorance. I will not be part of the people that will see Uganda to likes of Libya because I received a hundred dollar note.

The question is how do people that encourage violence be claiming to be fighting for freedom? How much more damage will they do when they attain power?

It is actually very ironic that NUP supporters and activists on whatsApp groups and social media platforms are even teaching people how to use petrol Bombs yet they say they are fighting violence.  This is not personal but the kind of content that NUP platforms are sharing is alarming that generations may not undo the damage they are causing to desperate minds.

A leader should give us hope and not create restlessness.

Opposition should not be giving us an alternative by causing a crisis after a crisis in the country. Then what difference will they be creating? Taking us through the History of suffering may be.

True leadership requires order, peace, strategy and character.  There is nothing that  will bring people to your camp if the talk held there is violence and distraction of life. Leadership is not a rehearsal stage – it requires readiness, maturity and genuine love for people and the state.  Youth ought to be as wise as possible to discern and choose the right side. Peace, Unity and prosperity is the right side.
