On 27th July 2022, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) posted on its Facebook page alleging that Hon. Attan Moses Okia the party candidate in the Soroti East by-election had been poisoned. According to the post on FDC Facebook page, Attan was poisoned on Tuesday at one of their campaign rallies.
It should be noted that Attan spent the last days of his campaigns with influential opposition leaders meeting their supporters in the different places. He was in the company of Patrick Amuriat, Kiiza Besigye, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, Erias Lukwago, Nandala Mafabi, Salaam Musumba and Ssemuju Nganda among others.
National Unity Party and Forum for Democratic Change recently forged an alliance to work together in the Soroti by-elections, in order to defeat the NRM candidate.
However there has always been a lot of bad blood between these two political parties that leaves the public wondering as to whether really their alliance is genuine or just circumstantial.
NUP members are accused of murdering an FDC supporter and were arrested including the Member of Parliament for Kassanda Hon. Frank Kabuye who were at Makerere during the campaigns where a student of UCU was stubbed to death.
Wanyera Simon, an FDC supporter and confidant to Kizza Besigye, questions whether the bad blood could have withered so fast that they all ran to Soroti to allege full support for the FDC candidate, or it is a cover up for the Makerere Murder? The same candidate they swore full support for is hospitalized and alleged to have been poisoned. Is NUP genuinely supporting FDC or clearing its path?
Mr. Wanyera said that in the central region where NUP comfortably enjoys wide support, NUP doesn’t want FDC near its political activities for example a month ago when Dr. Besigye held a demonstration for rising commodity prices, NUP significantly distanced itself from anything related to FDC.
"They claim to support us where we have support but not where we do not. We know these NUP guys and we are watching them closely," Wanyera said.
Wanyera stated that NUP is out for personal gains and to eliminate FDC from the political scene that’s why it has directed its efforts to get involved in disrupting all FDC activities directly and indirectly.
Patrick Amuriat Oboi the FDC party President during the NEC meeting held at Najjanakumbi on 18. July. 2022, was not in support of the FDC-NUP alliance in Soroti because of the past instances where NUP has directly disrupted activities of FDC repeatedly. He went on to give examples of several campaigns in Arua, Jinja Municipality East, Rukungiri, Hoima among others.
During the NEC meeting Amuriat went on to say this offer was received by a pinch of salt by FDC because they know that NUP are very mischievous people whose objective is always not drawn from good faith but to achieve something for themselves.
One wonders who could have poisoned Hon. Moses Attan Okia if not those close to him during the timeline in which he allegedly got poisoned. Is he trying to allege that his colleagues in or out of FDC poisoned him?
If the poison allegations are true, then it is evidently seen that the enemy is within his recent circles.
The writer is an aggrieved FDC supporter.
