Police warns artists against illegal demonstrations
Uganda Police Force has warned artists from the country's creative industry to desist from unlawful planned protests.
This comes after artists circulating circulars calling for a demonstration on March 31 2021, where they'll be protesting against the continued lockdown of their industry due to the prevalence of Covid-19.
Police has warned that they will not allow the planned demonstrations since they will lead spread of Covid-19.
Below is a full statement by police.
The territorial Police of Kampala Metropolitan Area has noted with concern messages on social media and distributed leaflets urging the general public, especially promoters, artistes, comedians and musicians, to participate in demonstrations tomorrow (March 31) at the national theatre in Kampala City.
Although demonstrations are a human right , organisers must follow required of lawful processes before demonstrations.
Currently, gatherings that are likely to lead to the spread of COVID-19 virus are prohibited in accordance to Ministry of Health guidelines.
Police will enforce the guidelines to the letter.
We advise the organisers to desist in engaging in unlawful demonstrations.
The Police will deploy strategically in order to stop any unlawful act from taking place.
We call upon the organisers of these demonstrations to opt for other lawful ways of passing on their grievances with disrupting the day to day running of business in Kampala City which is currentlypeaceful .
