A total of 687 people recovered from COVID-19 in 24 hours, according to Saturday's update from the health ministry. Now, the cumulative number of recoveries stands at 54845.
At the same time, new infections dropped to 770 after holding steady for two days above 1,000--1,081 (Thursday), 1,048 (Friday). The positivity rate dropped to 10.9 percent, the lowest in the last month.
This means Uganda has now had a cumulative total of 82,852 COVID-19 cases since the first case was reported in the country in March 2020.
The ministry said of the 7,084 test samples taken from across the country, only 770 people were found to have the virus. Also, the number of deaths dropped to 37 from 50 deaths, another positive.
However, cumulative deaths climbed to 1,910.
Explaining the steep rise on Friday, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the health minister said the ministry had decided to adjust the country's COVID-19 fatality statistics upwards to account for non-PCR confirmed deaths (or those clinically proven by doctors going by symptoms presented by the patient before death).
PCR or Polymerase Chain Reaction is a test performed to detect genetic material from a specific organism, such as a virus. The test detects the presence of a virus if you are infected at the time of the test.
