Lawyers have cautioned politicians Robert Kyagulanyi and Patrick Amuriat who are conducting themselves in total disregard of the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) during their campaigns to shun the habit.
Kyagulanyi and Amuriat have been seen carrying out processions and rallies contrary to the Covid-19 prevention guidelines issued by the ministry of health and the Electoral Commission.
A group of Lawyers , under their umbrella body, the "Network of Public Interest Lawyers" (NETPIL) describes the actions as being irresponsible because they expose the majority of innocent Ugandans to contracting the pandemic.
In their joint press statement presented by Arthur Nsereko at a press briefing at the Makerere University Guest House in Kampala, on Sunday, the lawyers said it is a pity that despite the issuance of the SOPs and other guidelines by the national elections body, ministry of health and the world health organisation, aimed at protecting Ugandans, some candidates have deliberately remained defiant for their selfish interests.
"We are gravely concerned about the conduct of candidates that have, in the eyes of the public, chosen to disregard the standard operating procedures meant to safeguard the populace against catching the deadly COVID-19.
"We call upon all aspirants to act responsibly and place high value on our lives and those of the citizens from whom you seek votes," Nsereko noted.
He implored politicians to avoid mass rallies and processions, noting that it puts the lives of the participants and the entire country at risk of contracting coronavirus.
Citing the death of Kamuli Municipality MP Rehema Watongola, the lawyers urged Ugandans, especially those vying for political leadership to respect the guidelines.
Apart from President Yoweri Museveni, who has been avoiding massive rallies and processions, the rest of the candidates especially Robert Kyagulanyi and Patrick Amuriat have been involved in addressing rallies and holding processions.
Several political analysts have commented that those who are carrying out rallies and processions, risking the lives of their supporters only care about the positions they're contesting for but not the voters.
How many people have got covid ever since this campaign trail started from Kyagulanyi's rallies? People shoe us the figures that will help us consider your argument.
ReplyDeleteMy friend will disagree but it's the fact. People are minding about them selves. I wish these elections had been put on a hold
