The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has increased production of medical supplies to boost the country’s efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso, the items currently being manufactured include medical face masks, hand sanitisers and liquid soap.
The products are being manufactured by Luwero Industries, a subsidiary of the National Enterprise Corporation, which is the commercial arm of the UPDF.
“I have led a team to Luwero Industries to take stock of the efforts under National Enterprise Corporation in the fight against COVID-19. Several products are being made and these include oxygen whose purity is 99.9%,” Byekwaso said in a tweet posted on the UPDF spokesperson’s Twitter handle Thursday, July 08.
“The production process is rigorous with a lot of trouble taken to ensure a fine product which has to undergo sterilisation to kill any germs present. The items are then packed into boxes, ready for transportation.”
Uganda is currently experiencing the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic characterised by exaggerated infections, severe illness and deaths.
However, health experts have advised that the continued observing of the standard operating procedures (wearing face masks, washing hands with soap and water and maintaining social distance) to curb the spread of the virus is what will save the country from the deadly COVID-19 variants.
Predictions from the National Planning Authority (NPA) indicate that Uganda is expected to reach the peak of the COVID-19 second wave mid-this month.
