Kawempe North Member of Parliament Hon. Latif Ssebagala has made a U – turn and diced to contest and retain his MP seat as an independent even though he belong to the National Unity Platform.

Speaking at the burial of his late brother Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala who was laid to rest today in Kisasi, Latif revealed that he has made up his mind and that he will now contest as a member of parliament for Kawempe North.

Latif had earlier announced that he will quite parliament and contest for Kampala city Mayor as the NUP flag bearer. A few hours after he was nominated as the NUP’s flag bearer for the mayor race, he announced his resignation from the contest. Ssebagala cited the need to maintain unity for the good of the opposition.

Ssebagala said: “I remain a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and will still give all my support to Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu for the presidency.”

However his announcement to run as an independent in a constituency where NUP has already fronted a candidate has created friction and confusion in the party leaving many wondering what game he is playing.

other believe that this was Latif's way of avoiding NUP flag after foreseeing the party heading to collapse.
