Following the terror attacks on Ugandans in Kampala, the issue of who is bombing Ugandans has raised dust with a section of extremists and opinion leaders fronting the narrative of Muslims being targeted as suspects in this fracas.
To my dismay, the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has decided to be the most recent to betray Ugandans and the Moslem fraternity by calling for religious war.
While attending a burial ceremony of Sheik Noorman Katunda in Lusozi, village Kalungu District, Lukwago made claims that President Museveni is killing Sheiks and Muslims for reasons not known. He claimed that President Museveni intends to kill all Muslims and tarnish their name by affiliating them to the ADF.
These claims uttered by the leader of Kampala have not only left me shocked but are a direct indication that Erias does not care about his electorates.
Lukwago’s claim is that Muslims have the biggest number of suspects in these charges. He concludes that Muslims therefore are being targeted and arrested by President Museveni who he says is hostile to the entire Muslim fraternity in Uganda.
In a simple understanding his claims mean that the government is putting Christians against Muslims since he makes it appear as though the attackers are hostile to Christians.
This is dangerous and will create tension among the two factions but the only redemption we have is that government has not declared this war religious like the Lord Mayor is putting it out in the public. The government remains focused to eliminating terrorism.
His statements suggest that the terror war that the Security forces are fighting is nothing but religious wars. Museveni being Christian and Most of the victims in the recent bombings coincidentally being Christians, Lukwago’s claims are opening a bad war.
As a leader of Kampala city, he exposes his political hunger over the security and safety of his electorate. Instead of sensitizing people, he plays the fool that knows it all and insensitively make utterances that cause pain to the grieving families of the victims.
The list of the bomb victims who sustained injuries that was released by security contained over thirty three (33) citizens of Uganda. Coincidentally, 99 percent of those people were Christians.
With such a figure where the victims were randomly affected, the government has remained focused to the cause of fighting the terrorists and has not declared this a religious war. On several occasions the government is on record that it is not targeting any Muslim. It is coincident that some of the terror suspects bare Muslim names.
For a leader like Erias Lukwago to come out and rally for a religious battle amongst Ugandans is not only a misinformation but a dangerous venture which the public should take serious by bashing it right before it grows.
It is clear that the Lord Mayor’s hatred for President Museveni surpasses his reasoning at this rate. However, his move to remain politically relevant instead of joining the Ugandans and government to fight the real terrorists, he is hiding among the innocent Muslims by pretending to be on their side.
It is not enough to say that man is mad when his actions reveal that he is consciously breeding a religious war amongst Masses.
Lukwago’s utterances should not go unpunished and if by all means there is no law that counters public figures from misleading masses, I think it is time such a law should be enacted in the interest of National Security.
