Government is putting emphasis on mass vaccination of all eligible persons and community disease surveillance by strengthening Village Health Teams (VHTs).
Hon. Matia Kasaija on 14th June, 2022 presented the 2022/2023 budget to the Nation at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. Special focus has been given to Health Sector as a way of enabling Ugandans recover from the Covid-19 pandemic impact.
Hon. Matia Kasaija said that the VHTs will be trained on the prevention of Covid-19 and the benefits of vaccination in their communities.
They will also be equipped with a smartphone to help them with data collection, verification and communication with communities. They will be able to do reach out and also liaise with responsible stakeholders in case of complaints and cases in communities.
VHTs will receive bicycles to ease their movements in order to carryout sensitization and coordination of health activities especially with the mass vaccination against Covid-19.
Additional Health assistants and surveillance officers will be recruited to support the VHTs.
In relation to Covid-19 fight, the Ministry of Health will also start implementing the Uganda COVID-19 Emergency Response and Preparedness Project. This will be supported by a grant from the World Bank amounting to US Dollars 180.3 million (equivalent to Ushs. 667.1 billion).
This grant will finance the rapid detection, prevention and quick responses to threats posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic. It will also finance the strengthening of national systems for public health preparedness.
Over the years, the Government of Uganda has been working hard towards improving service delivery to Ugandans. The VHT strategy was initiated to ensure that there is accessible, cost effective services tailored to the local needs of communities.
The VHTs are the first line of health service provision in communities. They engender community participation in health and link the communities to the formal health service delivery system.
With training and being equipped, the VHTs’ will ensure observance of communities to COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) set by Government of Uganda, practice home based care for positive mild cases, and track and address COVID-19 myths at household level through community sensitization.
