Minister of state for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Fred Kyagulaga Bwino |
The Ministry of Agriculture through Heifer International and Hello Tractor have released 11 tractors to Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs during a function held at Kati-Kati in Lugogo, Kampala.
Government started the implementation of a project that will see the country equipped with 10,000 tractors in ten years. This project is expected to boost productivity and ensure food security.
According to the State Minister for agriculture Fred Kyakulaga Bwino, Government has come up with an agriculture mechanization plan to reorganize the sector.
"We have established regional mechanization centers in Buwama, Mpigi district for Central Region, Agwata, Dokolo district for Northern Region,
Kiryandongo and Mbale districts," Kyakulaga said.
He added that the tractors will be arriving next month in October and that the ministry would buy more every financial year thereafter.
“The move is intended to increase the tractor coverage to at least every Sub-county, so our target is to have about 10,000 tractors in the country to increase from the current about 2,500 that we think are functional. We want to increase the percentage of arable land that is under agriculture,” he said.
Heifer Uganda and Hello tractor recently came up with a collateral-free financial model dubbed 'Pay As You Go' (PAYG) to help farmers increase productivity.
