Police vows to teargas and arrest those involved in processions ahead of presidential nominations.

Uganda Police Force has revealed that they are closely monitoring politicians who are planning to carryout illegally rallies and processions in the forthcoming presidential nomination exercise scheduled for 2nd and 3rd November 2020.

Police indicates that they have information about certain politicians who are ferrying people to Kampala for their intended processions. This was revealed today by the Director Operations AIGP Edward Ochom.

"For those political actors and groups that are still defiant and mobilizing Boda Boda riders and militias onto the streets; and ferrying supporters from upcountry into illegal processions and rallies; we are closely monitoring them,” AIGP Edward Ochom the Director Operations remarked.

He warned of serious consequences for those who involve themselves in any illegal procession or rally. “Therefore, any Presidential Aspirant who mobilizes boda bodas for a procession risks being arrested including those boda boda riders. We have plans to respond proportionately, in the face of violent crime, which may include the use of teargas to disperse these violent groups and arrest the culprits for prosecution,” Ocham added.

Robert Kyagulanyi the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer is one of the presidential aspirants who plans to carryout a procession on his nomination day.

Kyagulanyi has already mobilized several boda boda groups and other youth groups and they are planning to defy police and Electoral Commission guidelines and carryout processions.

The Electoral Commission directed that each aspiring presidential candidate should go for nomination with not mother than ten people due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.

However Kyagulanyi and other candidates like Henry Tumukunde and Patrick Amuriat have insisted on carrying out processions of as many people as they can get.

The previous processions that have been carried out by Kyagulanyi have been characterized by violence, chaos and death. This should be a worry to anyone who intend to join since he/she will be putting life at stake.
