Kasese flood victims affected when River Nyamwamba flooding have received relief items from the government.

During the visit at Muhokya settlement camp in Kasese, Robinah Nabbanja the Prime Minister said the government had donated 40,000 tonnes of maize, 20,000 tonnes of beans, 2,000kgs of sugar, 1,000 jerricans, and 1000 boxes of soap among others.

She disclosed that during a cabinet meeting on Monday President Yoweri Museveni ordered her to resettle the victims.

“President Museveni told me to come and assess the situation in the camp and also let you know that we are soon relocating you to your new home,” she said.

She also urged the residents of Muhokya to observe the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees Hillary Onek said the government is much aware of the district’s problem of floods and mudslides and they will soon come to an end.

Onek said one of the worst experiences a person can ever have is living in the settlement camp.

“I remember during the Kony war in my family lived in a settlement camp and there was a lot of suffering. The sooner we solve this problem, the better,” he said.

Onek called upon the district, leaders to identify the land on sale so that the government can negotiate its prices for the settlement of the victims.

“The President pledged that you will be relocated and we are soon relocating you. The commissioner for disaster preparedness Rose Nakabugo will come back in two weeks time and give you our way forward,” he said.

The state Minister for Environment Beatrice Anywar said the people in Kasese were told to move away from the banks of River Nyamwamba but they failed.

“The river is trying to claim back its territories but the residents have failed to understand that. Why can’t they simply understand it so that the environment is preserved,” Anywar said?

She added that in two months time  the country is expecting to have another rainy season, the river banks may burst again.
