Government through the ministry of health has installed more Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in 18 hospitals countrywide, including Mulago National Referral Hospital.
In a statement Yesterday, government said; “Using the available funds, the health ministry has installed ICU beds in Mulago, and Regional Referral Hospitals of; Lira, Jinja, St. Mary's Lacor, Mbale, Entebbe, Kawempe, Mbarara, Soroti, Naguru, Kabale, Hoima, Arua, Bombo, Fort portal, Moroto, Mubende, and Gulu.”
Depending on where it has been procured, an ICU bed costs between sh8m and sh10m, according to medical experts. This implies that government has spent about sh180m on the ICU beds.
Several people, including health workers, have died during the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak due to lack of ICU beds where they could be admitted.
In the statement posted on twitter, government added that it has also imported 1,840 normal admission beds, adding that; “another 4,600 beds are being manufactured locally to bring the total to 6,440 patients’ beds.”
During the first lockdown in March last year, President Yoweri Museveni instructed the health ministry to put in place at least 4,200 beds at Namboole for COVID-19 patients.
Despite the COVID-19 deaths being registered, several Ugandans are recovering from the virus. A total of 579 people have recovered from COVID-19 as of today June 30, data from the health ministry shows.
Records released on June 29 showed that 522 patients recovered. This is in addition to 512 recoveries reported on June 28 and 339 recoveries reported on June 27. As of today, the cumulative total recoveries are 52,961 patients.
“Results of COVID-19 tests done on June 28, 2021, confirm 543 new cases. The cumulative confirmed cases are 79,977,” according to the health ministry.
A total of 34 new deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,023, ever since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.
A total of 856,025 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 so far. According to President Museveni, the ultimate solution to COVID-19 is vaccination and Uganda needs to vaccinate at least 4.8 million people before COVID-19 measures can be relaxed.
