Kyagulanyi to conduct a procession on his nomination day, defying Covid-19 guidelines

Kyagulanyi Robert who is set to be nominated as a presidential candidate by the independent electoral commission on 3rd November 2020, has vowed to host a political procession defying Covid-19 prevention guidelines.

Kyagulanyi and National Unity Platform(NUP) are mobilizing their supporters to carry out a political procession to and after his nomination.

The NUP processions are known to be violent and always involve youth who go beating people on the road, looting and causing traffic destruction. The NUP/people power processions have also recently caused several deaths due to the chaos embed in them.

The Independent Electoral Commission of Uganda has directed the presidential candidates to come with a maximum of 10 people due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. However, Kyagulanyi has insisted on endangering the lives of his supporters by carrying out a procession.

The Uganda Medical Association has also argued Ugandans to shun political rallies in order to avoid an increase in the spread of Covid-19, therefore staying away from such processions has been highly recommended for safety reasons by the medics and Police.

Police has vowed to arrest Presidential aspirants who carry out any kind of procession. “Any presidential aspirant, who makes a procession, contrary to Independent Electoral Commission guidelines of having only 10 people, will be arrested and detained. We appeal to the aspirants not to defy the Independent Electoral Commission guidelines,” Kampala Metropolitan Police PRO SP Patrick Onyango has announced.
