BREAKING NEWS: Truss Resigns As UK Prime Minister and Leader of Conservative Party
Liz Truss has resigned as the United Kingdom Prime Minister (PM)becoming the shortest serving PM in the history of Britain. Her resignation followed a chaotic parliamentary vote that saw Tory MPs rebel against the resignation of her home Secretary.
Ms. Truss was elected by the Tory membership in September and had served for a period of only 44 days.
In a speech delivered outside Downing Street, Ms. Truss said she would remain in the position until a successor formally takes over as conservative party leader and is appointed Prime minister by King Charles III.
“I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” Ms. Truss said.
Ms Truss's resignation comes after a period of political and economic turbulence which forced her to sack his Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and replaced him with Jeremy Hunt. The Conservative party has promised to conduct elections by next week in order to vote for the new Premiere and the leader of the party.
Meanwhile, the Labour party leader Sir Keir Starmer has called for an immediate general election following Ms. Truss's resignation that left leadership vacuum in the UK.
