The National Unity Platform (NUP) camp is divided after party president Robert Kyagulanyi suspended 5 members from Busoga region.
In a letter dated 12th January 2023, signed by the secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya suspending the Busoga leaders and constituting a special committee to hear their case and take the necessary action, the NUP diehards loyal to the suspended leaders have threatened to defect from the party and join the NRM, or other parties if their leaders are not reinstated in two weeks.
An interview with Nsongambi Saulo, the Jinja district NUP chairperson reveals that there are many people in NUP top leadership who in the past and even now continue to undermine the party but nothing has been done to them.
Nsongambi cites an example of Hon. Mbazira Bashir who has refused to submit and report at the Kamwokya based headquarters and nothing has been done.
He also cites the money Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi has been taking from the COSASE investigations like the Civil aviation authority (CAA) bribe and thus tarnishing the name of the party but he has not been summoned to answer.
“Many of the leaders in the NUP Kamwokya base are corrupt but because they come from a certain region of the country they are not talked about. We are being targeted because we speak the truth and want transparency, therefore if we are not reinstated within two weeks, we shall leave with all of our supporters,” Nsongambi stated.
Among the suspended leaders were Moses Bigirwa the deputy secretary for mobilization, Mr. Muwanguzi Andrew the head of Patriotism and ideology, Mr. Bamu Lulenzi the coordinator Busoga sub region, Mr. Mukuve Jamal Youth coordinator and Mr. Nsongambi Saulo the Jinja district NUP chairperson.
The NUP suspended leaders insist there is a deliberate move to sideline Busoga region from top NUP leadership even with all the massive support that the party enjoys from the region.
