Touring Mountain Rwenzori



Mountain Rwenzori is one of the best tourist destinations in Uganda. Also commonly referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon”, Mountain Rwenzori situated in western Uganda close to Uganda’s border with Congo.

Its snow covered peak is the second highest peak on the African continent, while its lower slopes are; blanketed by a flourishing bamboo, damp montane forest and moorland. 

Huge tree heathers plus vibrant mosses cover the sides of this mountain while the large lobelias plus the everlasting flowers, forming an amiable vista making it one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park hosts the highest areas of the 120 km long, 65 km wide Mountain Rwenzori ranges. The national park is habitat t approximately 70 different mammal species and close to 220 bird species among which are 19 Albertine Rift endemics, in addition to a range of rare vegetation cover.


Mountain Rwenzori is an international first-class challenging mountaineering Uganda tour destination; whose summit – the Margherita Peak which is the highest on the mountain can be conquered in 9 to 12 days by well trained climbers. Non skilled climbers are offered less challenging routes which will as well offer them the opportunity to explore the places close to the peaks.

The high Mountain Rwenzori comprises of six different mountains. Although it is located only a couple of miles north of the equator crossing, Mount Stanley is the highest of all standing at a height of 5,109 meters, Baker standing at a height of 4843 meters and then Speke towering at 4890 meters and fascinating about these is the fact that each of these peaks is entirely covered by non-seasonal glaciers. These peaks can be reached by hiking the Central Circuit trail or the Kilembe Trail


 

The Rwenzori Mountains is the second tallest mountain in Africa after mountain Kilimanjaro. This UNESCO world heritage site is jealously protected as the Rwenzori Mountains National Park and managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The unique landscape of the Rwenzori mountain range is outstanding, with still by far the biggest glaciers in Africa, incomparable beautiful, and of very different character to the high single standing volcanoes of Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya.

Trekking the mystic Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda is a truly fantastic and unique experience, the wonder of the high glaciers, the beauty of the valley of nine lakes, the bearded lichen hanging from giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snow capped peaks.

 The wide variety of flora and fauna with several biospheres as you ascend through different vegetation zones creates the ultimate experience for trekking and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful treks in the world.

The Rwenzori Mountains is a World Heritage Site and offers the opportunity to see nature at its best. The plant life varies from heavy tropical rainforest, bamboo forests, montane cloud forests to alpine vegetation and the scenery is truly spectacular. Above 4,500 metres the snow and glaciers add that special dimension to the wondrous views throughout this pristine mountain range.


 

There are a variety of trekking and climbing options from one day to twelve days to suit your style of adventure and schedule. The Rwenzori range is a true mountain range with many climbs and descents and making it a tough climb however the scenery and beautiful vegetation are incredible. The high rainfall of more than three metres per year, the moss covered rocks, the dense vegetation, the tall peaks and cliffs towering above to the moss covered valleys and meandering streams create a 'Alice in Wonderland atmosphere' which changes through several biospheres as you climb making the "Rwenzori Mountains" a truly unique experience.
