Uganda launches Medical Drones for medical supplies in Kalangala
The Ministry of Health in partnership with the Infectious Disease Institute(IDI) Makerere has launched the use of drones to deliver medical supplies on the islands of Kalangala district.
The Academy for Health Innovation Uganda under IDI is officially launched the Medical Drones Project in Kalangala District yesterday.
Kalangala district is made up of 84 islands with 21 health centres which makes it difficult to residents to get some of the required health supplies. The medical drone project will help in addressing the challenge of medical supplies which will improve accessibility.
This project will address the challenge of geographical barrier in the region which has made it hard for the people to access medical services and supplies across the different islands.
The drones will be used to deliver medical supplies to communities and health facilities as well as transportation of samples.
Drone delivery of medical supplies is one of the many technological innovations being put to use in Africa.
In Rwanda and Ghana battery-powered drones operated by Zipline company move at 110 km per hour to deliver medical supplies.
