Uganda to receive over 1.2 million Covid-19 vaccine doses

In a bid to vaccinate more people against Covid-19, Uganda is set to receive an additional total of 1,260,000 doses of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine between July and August this year, Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the health ministry spokesperson has said.

He said  that 280,000 of the doses will be received in July and another 680,000 will follow later that month, both are AstraZeneca vaccines.

The remaining 300,000 doses expected to come into the country will be the Chinese Sinovac vaccine.

Uganda received its first batch of 964,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX facility in March this year to kick start its immunization program.

Other batches were expected to follow suit, but challenges arose when India stopped the exportation of the vaccine to first tackle its COVID crisis.

Early this month, the French government donated 175,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the country through the COVAX facility.

Vaccination using this new batch started on Monday this week.

As of June 27, the government has been able to vaccinate 854,443 people since March 10, this year, when the immunization program started.

Uganda aims to vaccinate 20% of its population, which is considered vulnerable. To do this, it needs to acquire 9 million doses of the anti-COVID vaccines.

The country is also working on it's own vaccine which will be available by the end of the year.
