301 nurses trained in Covid-19 critical care
The Ministry of Health has conducted in-service training for 301 nurses in critical care to support the fight against COVID-19 during the lockdown, the health minister, Dr. Ruth Aceng, has said.
She said these nurses, who were trained during the 42-day lockdown that President Yoweri Museveni announced on June 18, were deployed to various Covid-19 Treatment Units (CTUs) – both in public and private facilities.
“An additional 100 nurses are undergoing training, which will be completed in August 2021. Further to this, the Ministry has begun re-skilling 180 existing health workers (doctors and specialists both in private and public facilities) in oxygen titration, oxygen management, management of the critically ill and Infection, Prevention and Control (IPC) to bridge the gap in Intensive Care management,” Aceng said.
With support from the World Health Organisation (WHO), she said experts were hired to enhance Uganda’s capacity of its health workers in management of patients in critical care management at Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital.
The minister observed that the process of capacity enhancement will continue to all Regional Referral Hospitals. Besides the national regional referral hospital at Mulago, Uganda has 17 other regional referrals.
