Following the killing of over 27 people in the Greater Masaka Sub region by machete wielding criminals commonly known as Kijjambiya, several opposition leaders especially from the National Unity Platform(NUP) have pointed fingers at government insinuating that it has a hand in these killings.
Among those who have come out is Robert Kyagulanyi the President of NUP and Mathius Mpuuga the Leader of Opposition.
Kyagulanyi commented that “Comrades, it is apparent that in order to hide its own incompetence in stopping the serial murders, the regime either deliberately exaggerated its role in curbing the first wave, or has not been entirely truthful about its investigations into the motive and criminals behind the murders. At best, the regime is as clueless about these murders as we are. At worst, it exploited them for political capital by giving citizens false assurances that it had netted the suspects behind them when in fact it either had not or had shielded some of them. This conduct is consistent with the regime's favourite song of "we brought peace and sleep" when the reality is quite different as we all know”.
The speed the opposition is putting in in discrediting security and celebrating what they’re calling ‘security failure’ leaves many suspicious of whether they’re not in one way or another involved in this crime wave.
More so, the preliminary findings from the investigations on ground reveal that the machete gangs are funded by political groupings whose aim is to oust the current government as they like to call it “removing a dictator”.
One wonders; what group would kill the elderly who wholeheartedly support Museveni and the NRM for bringing “peace and sleep” if not the ones who want to remove the dictator? Who benefits from the lack of trust in security and government if not the political groupings who are singing praise to criminals for managing to elude security?
Historically, opposition groups and insurgents have attacked and killed NRM supporters across the country. For example, soon after the emergency of NRM leadership in Uganda in 1987, members of the Resistance Councils in Busia were killed by FOBA a pro-UPC rebel group led by the late Agrey Awori.
During the Northern Uganda war against LRA in the late 1990s and early 2000s, many people were murdered by LRA rebels because of collaborating with the UPDF and intelligence services. Due to UPDF’s commitment the NRM government put its people in IDP camps where they provided joint security.
In the recently concluded general elections, NUP goons intimidated and in some instances harmed NRM supporters and even threatened to kill them. Elders that supported NRM feared to campaign for their candidates that gave NUP a free ride in the entire Buganda region.
Therefore, the Killings of in Masaka seem to be another attack on NRM supporters and they can only be beneficial to those who are fighting the NRM.
However, for the criminals and the beneficiaries, their victory will be short-lived since security is closing-in on them. Over seventy suspects have so far been arrested, 10 taken to court and some have already confessed to committing these murders and their sponsors will be revealed.
Opposition leaders who mean good for their people should focus on working with security to bring the criminals to justice before the situation forces people into Internally Displaced Camps.
Security continues to assure Ugandans especially the people of Masaka that all the criminals will be kicked out and brought to justice.
President Museveni has also assured Ugandans that the people behind the gang terrorizing people in Masaka will not go away with it but will rather be brought to book adding that there is no way you can commit crime in Uganda and they don’t get you.
