Last Parliamentary visit: Rt. Hon. Dr. Jacob Oulanyah lays in State Respect

 

The body of former Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Jacob Oulanyah today lay in state at Parliament ahead of a special sitting for legislators to pay special tribute to him for the last time in the House.

The body of late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah to Parliament was escorted by numerous mourners who danced and celebrated the late Rt Honorable legacy. Donned in bow ties and suits in respect to the fallen speaker of parliament, mourners at parliament made their way through a crowded entrance to get a glimpse of the late speaker of parliament.

The Late Rt Hon. Jacob’s body arrived at the parliament at 9 am through a crowd of dancers (Acholi Bwola Dancers), mourners, and other dignitaries. The body was set to be viewed and his casket was adorned with flowers and the Ugandan flag.

The Vice-President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Alupo Jessica, The Prime Minister of Uganda Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Anta Among, former speaker of parliament, deputy speaker of parliament Hon. Tayebwa, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga were some of the dignitaries who attended the special tribute.

The house was chaired by Rt Hon Anita Among who eulogized her predecessor as a pan Africanist, patriot, and a good man. 

I was privileged to work with Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah as his deputy, and I can assure you; you can never have a better leader,” Rt. Hon Anita Among said.

Rt. Hon. Anita Among also thanked the President of Uganda for doing everything humanly possible to save the life of the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, including taking him to one of the best hospitals in Seattle, USA.

The Vice-President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Alupo Jessica representing the president also eulogized the late Rt Hon as a fierce leader and political head in Uganda and also in Northern Uganda.

He was not only passionate about politics but also committed his life to serving God and humanity. The late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah was a father and mentor to many. By the time of his death, he was sponsoring over 200 students at different education levels. He was also instrumental in the construction of the cancer institute in Omoro,” said H.E Jessica Alupo.

Members of parliament from different parties all paid their last respects to their fallen leader, the speaker of the 11th parliament.

Leader of opposition in Uganda Hon. Mathias Mpuuga-, donned in a bow tie also eulogized the late as a good man, who was politically sound and principled.

Members of the Uganda Bikers Association raised their helmets as they paid their last respects to their colleague, the late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah outside of parliament as the body was being wheeled into the House. The biker’s association also paid its last respects in parliament.


Rt. Hon. Dr. Jacob Oulanyah served Parliament in different capacities as a two-term Deputy Speaker before his election as Speaker in May 2021. The late Oulanyah also represented Omoro County as a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

His body will stay overnight at the House before being taken for a State funeral at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Wednesday where H.E President Museveni will be chief mourner.

After the prayers in Kololo, the body will be airlifted to Lalogi, Omoro District, for family members, relatives, and friends to convey their last respects before burial on Friday, which has been declared a public holiday.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Jacob Oulanyah died on March 20 at the age of 56 at the University of Washington Medical Centre, a hospital in Seattle, United States, where he had been admitted for specialized treatment for cancer. The immediate cause of death was multiple organ failure; heart, lungs, liver, and kidney failure.
