‘Muda ku Muda’ collections out of site as NUP asks public to pay for their candidates nomination
The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi has appealed to the general public to contribute money for the nomination of his party’s flag bearers.
Kyagulanyi posted on Facebook highlighting that most of NUP flag bearers for Member of Parliament contest, cannot afford the UGX 3million required for nomination. “We are receiving so many calls from our candidates, especially from Western and Northern Uganda, who risk not being nominated because they don't have the required 3 Million Shillings,” the statement reads.
The post has generated mixed reactions in the general public with some agreeing to support and many others arguing that if someone can’t rise 3 million, then he or she is not fit to be an MP adding that such people are only interested in jobs to enrich them salves.
People are also demanding for accountability of the collections of the ‘Muda ku muda’ fundraising campaign that was launched a few weeks ago saying that the money they contributed was meant to cover such costs.
In August 2020, NUP announced a fundraising drive named “MUDA KU MUDA @10K WE CAN” intended to solicit financial support from all party members and friends for the forthcoming general elections. Under the drive, every NUP member or well-wisher was required to contribute at least 10,000 shillings and above
Kyagulanyi the President NUP said that the party was in need of 1.7 trillion shillings for its activities.
To date, asking the general public to contribute nomination fee for NUP flag bearers indicates that the Muda Ku Muda campaign has not been successful or the collections from the fundraising have been swindled.
There has been some unease within the diaspora community with some of NUP leaders resigning as accusations of financial impropriety and lack of accountability by NUP leaders fly about.
