NRM starts process of choosing the speaker of parliament
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has embarked on the process of selecting candidates for speaker and deputy speaker posts in parliament.
The NRM Electoral Commission has called on party members that are interested in the speakership and deputy speakership positions of the 11th Parliament to pick interest forms from the NRM electoral commission starting tomorrow 5th May.
Two NRM CEC members, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga the current speaker and Hon. Gilbert Olanya her deputy have both expressed interest in the position but are yet to pick interest forms.
In March 2021, Rebbeca Kadaga launched her bid for speakership for a third term at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Kadaga told MPs present that she was interested in retaining her slot for speakership because she represents the will of the people.
She told fellow legislators that during her two terms as speaker of parliament, she has managed to move to different parts of the country, discovering the challenges facing different areas.
On the other hand, Mr Oulanyah’s mobilisation has been more covert than overt, with his team hardly coming out to say as much as those who back Ms Kadaga have. The contrast is even more pronounced going by the way the two principals have conducted their campaigns so far.
Ms Kadaga used the occasion of a function to launch her campaigns at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala to also launch a tirade against Mr Oulanyah, who she accused of ducking handling crucial and controversial business in the House.
She picked on the handling of the Bill that led to the removal of age limits for presidential candidates, which she accuses Mr Oulanyah of dodging and singles out as her biggest accomplishment for this term.
