COVID-19 taskforce to meet and decide on the vulnerable groups that will receive aid from Government

The national COVID-19 taskforce is expected to meet on Wednesday 23rd June to decide on the vulnerable groups that will receive aid from government and also discuss concerns raised by members of the public regarding the lockdown measures.

The task force was supposed to meet today, but the meeting was postponed to tomorrow due to the handover ceremonies that were taking place at the office of the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja chairs the taskforce.

“There is a lot of feedback from different stakeholders and members of the public pointing at gaps, which need to be discussed and addressed,” said the source on the task force.

Among the important concerns raised, the source said, is the issue of how to deal with the COVID-19 vaccination exercise in the face of the lockdown, especially for those due to get a second jab, and giving relief to the vulnerable.

On June 18, President Yoweri Museveni locked down the country as a way of containing the surging COVID-19 infections and deaths. The rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths is due to the emergence of new virus variants from mainly the UK, South Africa, India, and Nigeria.

A total of 680 people have succumbed to the virus ever since it broke out in the country in March last year, with the last 20 deaths recorded as of June 19. However, 49,794 out of the 72,679 COVID-19 confirmed cases have recovered, the health ministry data shows.
