Bobi Wine made a number of false allegations in his criticism of fellow Musicians led by Jose Chameleon who met with Special Presidential Advisor Salim Saleh to advocate for the betterment of livelihoods and working conditions of musicians in Uganda. Bobi Wine is no longer able to detach politics from any issue he looks at in the country.
“Shows were banned on account of COVID19”.
Music shows have never been categorically banned in Uganda on account of Covid 19 but rather all public gathering where deemed as occasions that may spread a dangerous disease something that Bobi Wine acknowledges in his song “Corona Alert”. Other such gathering are burials, weddings, rallies etc. this has affected people in all industries and not musicians specifically.
No musician has ever been banned in Uganda for composing a song critical of the government. Bobi Wine himself has made a career out of singing songs that highlight the plight of ordinary Ugandans. When Nubian Li and Dan Magic were incarcerated in Kitalya during the elections, it was because they were deemed to have been in possession of military stores a case which they are still facing in court.
“the very person who destroyed the music industry has finally been able to make artistes bow down in humiliation”.
The music industry has grown leaps and bounds since President Museveni took power in 1986. The industry has been liberalised and has offered countless opportunities to rather hopeless individuals like Bobi Wine who would have found it difficult to attain meaningful employment in any other industry. Bobi Wine cannot name a single Ugandan musician currently in exile because of persecution by the government as he cites was a case with previous governments such as that of Iddi Amin.
“Gen. Museveni believes in the divide and rule concept”.
It is not the prerogative of President Museveni to unite musicians. Uganda is a democratic country and musicians have the right to associate with whomever they choose. You cannot blame the failure of musicians to unite on the President. We rather blame people like Bobi Wine who have had the opportunity to serve in Parliament yet failed to present tangible solutions to challenges facing the music industry.
“I can only imagine the disappointment of the fans who rely on their artists to raise their voices”.
Bobi wine has betrayed the fans more than anyone else. How many of his fans can come out and say that they are proud of his association with the American Rainbow Coalition for the advancement of Gay Rights? Bobi Wine is also being used by the Gay Rights activists to advance and legitimise their agenda in Uganda.
What legislation has he authored or pushed to advance the music industry?
At least the Uganda Musicians Associations has tried to make headway in plans to improve the livelihoods of its members. What we should be discussing are the outcomes of the meeting rather than try to whitewash whatever headway that may have been gained.
Bobi Wine may now feel that he is on a higher pedestal compared to the musicians in the country because of his political gains but he should not forget the struggle and the role the industry played in building his portfolio.
