Opinion: Youth- No Government all over the world will ever give jobs to all her youth or Citizens
AKAMPA Tanbull
Well, I came to Kampala in the mid 90s, was brought by my brothers to study since they had got some jobs, so they thought about poor me staying in the village at my Uncle's home and detected that I would not continue with School and indeed I was already planning to run away to my maternal aunt's homes in Mayanga- Kabira or Murisa- Ntungamo! To cut the story short, these brothers of mine had appreciated the importance of education even when themselves were still a bit struggling with life and had not yet gone far with their own education!
Yesterday, I tweeted that No any Government in the world will ever give jobs or capital to all her youth- their first capital are brains, skill, contacts, networks or family!
Some youth got offended and abused me, others appreciated the fact and hard truth, and I want to categorically put it, that all over the world there will never be any Government that will create jobs or give capital not only to all the youth but the entire Citizens!
Youth are largely being used as campaign tools by Political parties where some small hand outs are given and when campaigns or elections are done, some handlers or politicians switch off their phones or change lines or even block you because they see that your importance has been extinguished, will write about what some of the youth groups I know went through during the 2021 general elections Campaign and how their contacts or handlers at State House or NRM have kept quiet and no longer pick phone calls nor reply to text messages yet they were promised that the future was secure if only President Museveni goes through again😆! (Story for another day)
The honest and hard truth I want to tell to all the young Ugandans or the youth, is that the capital you are looking for starts with you, your brains, your skill and associates including family, in my Primary Seven holidays, I started selling airtime, phone chargers and a charging booth for business men and Women around Cooper Complex, Nakivubu mews and Owino. I was introduced to this business by my brother Isaac, who used to pay me a daily commission! Public phone call booth were a booming business because very few people had personal mobile phones and telecom companies I think were exploiting the ignorance of Ugandans by then, they used to charge highly for calls as well monthly service fees, then airtime, then network at times one needed to first climb a tree or a hill...I saved enough money and bought my own phone which I went with to Muntuyera High School-Kitunga in S.1, I kept it hide in my socks until 3rd term, this was the year 2005, I started charging my fellow students who wanted to call their relatives to send them money via bus!
In my S.2/S.3 I became a Celebrity of sorts I think, I became the regional sales coordinator for Buzz Media and over the weekends I would vend magazines to all the big Schools in Western Uganda, as well in holidays, I would work at buzz events, thanks to Mr Ivan Kasozi, you trusted and believed in me.
I covered Imm'yera Solidarity blooms at Sosh this was party between Muntuyera H/S-Kitunga and Immaculate Girls School-Nyakibale (our beloved Old girls), I got paid 117,000 for running in new Vision as well those who wanted their photos to appear paid me. Since then, my life never remained the same.
After High School, I started vending News Papers (Red Pepper, University Post on Kampala streets).
I became a National Peer Educator later on became a trainer with SchoolNet Uganda and RutgersWPF on issues of SRHR (Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights), got a whooping cheque of 475,000/=, went to Nairobi on the invitation of WAYAN, came back with around 750,000/=, started selling used laptops, started Youth Advocacy Foundation Uganda-YAFU.
I met Mr James Okwi, and Rt Hon Dan Fred Kidega,(they have become part of my family) they gave me working space and since then I have never looked back, Never been employed by any other organisation. I have been earning a living through my hustles, skills, networks, contacts and families.
Why did I start with my story, I know there are many young people out there who seem not confident or so hopeful about the future and their frustrations emanate from NRM Government or Museveni overstaying in power, drop that mind set and focus on who you want to be, what you will do to be where you want to be and who you will do it with, the rest will remain history.
Government or jobs will soon or later come looking for you if you have a skills and you have made a name for yourself.
As we celebrate international youth day on Thursday, 12th August 2021, youth should position themselves to only demand and influence better policies that create conducive working environment, issues to do with taxation, high electricity tariff, huge interest on loans, how to tap into the oil and gas sector as well demand that Government brings vaccines as soon as possible.
The theme of International Youth Day 2021 is, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, with the aim of highlighting that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.
The day youth will stop crying/begging Government but make clear and straight demands, is the day Government will start looking at us as equal development partners
