On the 18th day of January 2022, Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change was on a television talk show discussing various issues concerning the country but one caught my eye and ear.
The accountant turned lawyer turned politician expressed his dissatisfaction with opposition party NUP and its leadership.
I do not usually agree with the Budari County west Member of Parliament but I am inclined to vehemently agree with him this time around.
In his televised interview, Hon. Mafabi expressed his disappointment in the National Unity Party and its leaders saying that they have done nothing to help build the country.
‘We have given NUP space to work because they thought we were doing nothing. What is Kyagulanyi doing? What are his people doing?’ questioned the member of parliament.
Hon. Mafabi continued to say that NUP accused the other political parties were massaging Museveni and questioned what they have done that has been impactful stating that even former presidential candidate John Katumba is doing a better job than NUP.
NUP president has been making rounds in the news not for good governance but for failure to run the party and for his MPs failure to represent their constituents in parliament. Instead of letting the NUP MPs do their jobs, Mr. Kyagulanyi insists that every member of the party who got elected to parliament pays him a monthly maintenance fee.
This has caused a bitter split between him and most of the members of parliament.
According to a local political analyst, there is a split in the party due to allegiances and also corruption.
‘The NUP members of parliament are the quietest in parliament, they don’t say a word and most don’t even come for parliamentary sessions. I think it’s because most of them don’t have ideas of their own, they depend on the party president for ideas and he has not had any recently because he is focusing on bettering life for himself and his luxurious family,” ‘said the political analyst.
Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has been accused of stealing 3.1b that the party received from Interparty Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) and also 1bn from The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Kyagulanyi is accused by his party members of living a luxurious lifestyle while they live in poverty.
Kyagulanyi’s net worth has sky rocked since 2018 when he joined politics. According to Forbes magazine, Bobi Wine jumped from Ugx 500 million in 2018 to over Ugx 26bn in 2021 which goes to further prove that he entered the political arena to gain wealth and not to help Ugandans.
With all infighting, cases of corruption, tribalism, and nepotism in NUP, it’s safe to say that the party is not long for this political world and will soon disintegrate from the inside out. This has already manifested itself through some of its supporters who up in arms against NUP legislators for not delivering any service in their first year of service.
