Some of NUP's defectors to NRM in Omoro district
When two football teams get into the field, each team aims at winning. The game loses meaning when one of them intentionally leaves the other to score in the inscription of unity.
The National Unity Platform’s (NUP) party decision to back Attan of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in the Soroti City East parliamentary by-election indicates the weak political agenda in the leadership which led to a mass exodus by youths.
Yesterday, 14th July, a section of 32 NUP youths in the Kamuli district Busoga region denounced NUP because of the act of backing FDC in the Soroti parliamentary by-election.
This was after a sharp disagreement with Moses Bigirwa the Eastern chief mobilizer of NUP as he was explaining to them the reasons for the NUP action of backing Attan in the coming Soroti by-election.
Bigrwa met them at his office located at Nawendwa road in Kamuli municipality where the security dispersed them as they almost fought each other.
"We see no future in NUP a party because if they have a different Manifesto from that of FDC why should they rush to support Attan who submits under FDC?” Lawrence a NUP supporter said.
He added that for us we have decided to turn to the left which meant they had crossed from NUP to the NRM ruling party.
Kamuli youths also blame NUP leadership that intentionally accepted to eat Attan’s money as a basis to suddenly jump out of the elections.
“We hear that Attan gave Ugx70million to the NUP executive something which enticed them to do such an act of betrayal to the NUP fraternity," Mudiima Samuel a youth leader said.
According to sources within NUP, the deal intended to raise funds for buying land and construction of NUP’s home in Makerere Kavule.
“This party has turned into a money grabbing organization and it’s not benefiting any of us the youth, we are also tired of not benefiting from our party,” Samuel continued.
The new NRM converts in Kamuli are expected to meet Robert Mutemo the Resident District Commissioner Kamuli district to undertake a short mindset course.
This comes just days after
a faction of five strong supporters from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)
party and National Unity platform party (NUP) in Kabale district joined the
ruling NRM.
The backing of Attan by the NUP leadership shows the lack of trust in the party members by its leaders and is the beginning of the party’s downfall.
