On Monday 19th September, Cabinet ministers held a meeting at Entebbe State House chaired by 1st Deputy Premier Rebecca Kadaga about the European Union (EU) Parliaments’ resolution over EACOP. The Ministers discussed the demonizing of 1500kms oil pipeline from Hoima – Uganda to Tanga- Tanzania, among other things.
According to the ministers, the EU parliament is biased because they based their resolution on allegations and hear say ignoring the Environmental report by NEMA.
“EU parliament could not even wait for a response from government of Uganda to their unfounded allegations, but went ahead and demanded that Total Energies which owns 60% shares on the EACOP project keeps away from it. If that isn’t imperialism on their part, what is it then?’’ queried one Minister.
The minister for Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze who has been one of the most vocal Ministers in support of EACOP, was joined by other ministers who vented out their immeasurable anger at the European Union.
However, the session turned stormy and heated as ministers discussed and debated on the selfish and imperialist nature of the EU Parliament.
State Minister for Energy Olupot Okasai came with a document which he referred to as a drafted response to EU for consideration and approval.
The Cabinet Ministers unanimously rubbished Olupot’s draft and threw it out citing the politeness in the draft, which they say did not match the extraordinary irritation that of the EU has caused.
“We must respond to those fellows with a vigorous political statement that is ballistic and not with the soft gloves the Ministry of Energy is putting forward,” a minister roared during the cabinet meeting.
The Ministers also wondered why the Ugandan Government is responding to the EU parliament stating that the EU never wrote to government formally about their resolution.
“Why are we even honoring them with such a formal response when they never wrote to us in the first place, there is no formal communication for us to respond to,” another minister stated.
The Cabinet Ministers resolved to make it known to the EU parliament that their provocation is an attack on Uganda’s Political Economy and development as a whole and will not be bullied into stopping the EACOP project.
They vowed to fight tooth and nail to ensure the success of EACOP.
