According to a party leader who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, Mafabi, who has made it clear it’s his time for the party top seat, installed bouncers after netting agents from Amuriat’s faction fraudulently issuing party cards to non-party members to participate in the pending party elections. FDC party vice chairperson for Eastern Region, Proscovia Salam Musumba, has condemned the bickering, saying that some leaders have turned the party into a market place.
This publication has also learned that a section of party members, led by party deputy spokesperson Herold Kaija, have petitioned members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to intervene in the situation before it gets worse.
However, the situation in FDC has already deteriorated since people in the inner circles of the current party president, Amuriat, say that he has vowed not to hold any discussions with Mafabi. He accuses his secretary general of undermining his leadership in order to unseat him. This has increased irritation among party members, who are worried that the upcoming elections may remain elusive or that if voting takes place, FDC will remain more divided than united.
From the breakaway of Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, who was the party president, which gave birth to his ANT party, odds are high that FDC will most likely suffer a natural death sooner rather than later.
