President Museveni Commissions the refurbished Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Lira
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has on October 21, 2020 commissioned the refurbished Uganda Martyrs Cathedral of Lira Diocese. The president congratulated the Christians of Lira diocese on the milestone, achieved as they mark their Golden Jubilee. “We must thank God that 50 years later, Uganda is now peaceful with freedom of worship as one of the liberties enjoyed minus restriction. I also applaud the Christians for leading the push to renovate the church, with us, the outsiders, only lending a hand,” Museveni remarked. After over two years of waiting, prayers and work, the newly refurbished cathedral was opened on 20/10/2020 where the main celebrant was His Grace John Baptist Odama, Archbishop of Gulu. President Museveni revealed that the Archbishop John Baptist Odama is leading a critical push among the people to create wealth through cassava growing for commercial purposes. First batch of Afghan refugees to arrive in Uganda on Sunday
The Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees, Eng Hilary Onek, has confirmed that the first batch of asylum seekers from Afghanistan will arrive in Uganda on Sunday. Onek was appearing on a local radio station talk show when he revealed that the first flight will carry about 140 people. He said subsequent flights will then follow. He said the Afghan nationals will not be treated as refugees since they are in transit to the US. They will not be taken to refugee settlement areas. They will, therefore, be accommodated at various hotels in Entebbe before being processed for their final destination. Early this week, it was revealed that Uganda agreeing to host about 2,000 Afghan nationals at the request of the US. Although they were expected to arrive on Wednesday, the government said modalities were still being worked out before the first batch could land at Entebbe International Airport. Buganda Youth denounce planned protests
Buganda Kingdom Youth Council has warned youth not to be hoodwinked into participating in an illegal protest at Mengo Palace. Youth mainly from the National Unity Platform are planning to carry out a violent protest on 19th April in the guise of showing concern about the health of the Kabaka. However, according to the Buganda Youth Council, these youth are being used by certain politicians to destroy Buganda's development efforts. The council has warned Buganda Youth not to be hoodwinked by those seeking individual gains as they continue working to fulfil the interests of the foreigners.
