Makerere University Ivory Tower to be rebuilt

Cabinet has resolved that the entire Makerere University main building be demolished and rebuilt to match its previous form and appearance as a way of conserving the architectural character of the building.

The main building also popularly known as the Ivory Tower, was on September 20, 2020, gutted with fire, destroying an iconic piece of history and vital documents.

Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the minister for ICT and national guidance on Tuesday (August 31) revealed that the move to rebuild the tower, was premised on recommendations from the two technical committees for the restoration of the Makerere University Main Administration building.

“Before demolition of the remaining parts of the building, a detailed photographic, conservatory study and documentation will be conducted,” Baryomunsi said during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre.

The main hall which was not affected by the fire will remain as-is but it will be refurbished and equipped with modern technologies.

All key elements he added, will be salvaged and stored in the museum to be called the main building museum 2020.

Cabinet also resolved to enhance the capacity of the national building review board to monitor buildings across the country for timely detection of deterioration related accidents.

The other issues to be resolved include; developing a disaster and risk management policy for the university as well as replacing electrical installations in all old buildings of the university, among others.
