Government has resolved to have all the residents living in areas within the slopes of mount Elgon along the river banks in Bugisu region relocated to a safer geographical landscape.
The move is part of the government response plans following the recent flood and landslides in the districts of Mbale, Manafwa, Bulambuli and Kapchorwa.
The government through the Office of Prime Minister with guidance from the Disaster Preparedness Committee has approved urgent plans including fixing all infrastructure-roads especially those in landslide and flood prone areas to enable farming and commercial activities to continue.
Others include urgent deliveries of medical supplies to displaced families especially to vulnerable mothers and children, and immediate deliveries of food reliefs and non -food items to the affected.
“Rapid assessment by the Ministry of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, NECOC, Mbale Emergency Operations Center, World Health Organization, Red cross, Commissioner Emergency medical services is currently underway, Search, rescue and retrieval of persons/bodies by the Uganda Red Cross Society & Uganda Police Force,” OPM confirmed.
According to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, the implementation of
the proposed course of action will employ an Inter-Ministerial,
Inter-Agency approach involving the whole government, donors, NGOs and
communities with the Office of the Prime Minister through the Ministry
of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees taking lead.
“OPM through the Ministry of, Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees is taking lead coordinating all Sector Ministries, Local Governments, Departments, Agencies and Partners through the existing National Platform for Disaster Preparedness and Management and the National Emergency Coordination and Operations Centre using the Disaster Risk Management Plan which was recently approved,” She ordered.
Following the incident that occurred on July, 30th 2022, about 26 people were confirmed dead, thousands of people displaced, several property including houses, vehicles, infrastructure and livelihoods were destroyed.
The incident was caused by a heavy downpour in Bugisu and Sebei regions that caused some rivers from Kapchorwa district to bust their banks leading to flooding and landslides in the area.
