Makerere Students Shun Guild President’s Call to Hasten Guild Elections

Makerere University students have declined the call by their former Guild President to participate in ‘faux’ elections.

The students say they are not in rush for a students’ guild, and won’t respond to Shamim Nambassa’s call claiming that these elections are bootless and only intended to benefit the Guild leaders with their close associates.

Shamim Nambassa, Makerere University’s 87th guild president has been rallying students to vote for a new Guild President. She took to her Twitter handle to say students will vote for their new guild president today Tuesday August 9th, 2022.

However, some students and followers have rejected the call with many saying it’s faux and she has since received backlash from her followers especially her fellow students. They also said that they are tired of the violence that is always filled with guild campaigns that even claimed the life of a student.

Some of her followers also believe there is no need for a Guild body given that most of the leaders end up doing nothing.

“Nonsense! We don't need guild stuff for now. We have a lot crossing our minds. Moreover we don't see anything done as promised by candidates,” Munanasi,” one of the students replied.

“Guild leadership is beneficial to the few ones. So don’t waste your time with kunga. Nawangwe oyee, killers ziiii,” Namanya Gard replied saying.

According to the electoral commission, there is no such arrangement to have guild elections on August 9th as Nambassa claims. They also added that Nambassa and her camp the NUP Makerere Chapter, are habitual spreaders of fake news.

Makerere University guild elections were earlier suspended by the university council following the death of Bewatte in a heated brawl between NUP and FDC.

The university is currently undertaking some changes in regards to the conduct of guild elections, and the findings will aid in the final decision making concerning the guild elections.
